The purpose of these tasks are to help me understand the existing music magazine industry and to help me develop my ideas when it comes to making my own magazine. I am going to analyse a few mixed genre magazines, to understand the conventions of each type, this will help me understand the differences between each of them, so when I chose my genre, I understand what things I should include, that will make the magazine successful. Here are the ones that I analysed.
My Questionnaire
I made a questionnaire to give out to people that are in the age range of 15-19. This is because this is the age target that I will aim my magazine towards, as this is most relevant to my knowledge and understanding, as this is the range my age is in. I have asked particular questions to this age group, about things that I need to know when developing and creating my own magazine. The purpose of this questionnaire is to get a deeper understanding of the audience and the things that they like about certain magazines, key elements that they look for, and what kind of genres they like to read about. This will help me when it comes to structuring and planning my magazine, as I will know the particular things to include and highlight.
Q-Magazine Analysis
My main inspiration for my magazine is Q-Mag, this is because we have the same kind of genre. This means that I can look at elements of Q-Mag, when I am unsure of something in my magazine. I have analysed a few covers of Q-Mag to look at some specific features in it.
Magazine Distributors
this is the first magazine distributor that I have researched. This company is Europe's number one privately owned publishing groups. It offers over 300 types of magazines in 15 countries. the companies biggest selling magazine is FHM (For him magazine)
This would be a good company to distribute TopRated because they are well established and are responsible for the sales of FHM meaning that they could help establish my magazine to the same standard, another reason is that they produce a lot of magazine and they are a global brand that sells in 15 countries.
This is another magazine distributer. This company has 13% market share in the magazine distributer industry. It exports magazines to over 90 countries and is the UKs biggest magazine distributer internationally.
As this is such a developed company, it is a stable business to go to, to develop magazines, this would be good for TopRated.
This is another magazine distributer, this one is smaller than the other two, but offers more to help with the launch of the magazine, offering advice from the barcode to the cover page of the magazine. they offer to work in partnership with you to help make the magazine as successful as possible.
This will be good for TopRated as it a new magazine, trying to establish itself within the UK, this would be a good option as they offer help with the establishment.
Shot Types
I have taken some pictures of my little brother to explore different shot types.
Wide shot- This is to show the whole body of someone, often used to show clothing in modeling shots
Mid shot- This is used to get a profile of someone, often seen in magazines on the cover page.
Low angle- This gives the illusion that someone is bigger, and more powerful.
High angle- This gives the illusion that someone is smaller and weaker.
Extreme close up- This usually portrays emotion, often around the eyes, if they are crying.
Close up- This is to show detail of something or someone.
